Data could be kept in any form, computer, paper or any other electronic media. As a matter of fact, ISO9001: Standard has specific sub-clauses which mentions about proper management of data and maintaining of records. Some data can be destroyed after a certain period. But, other data would be vital for the effective management of a company.

In other words, improper management of data could contribute to the success or failure of a particular company. Some companies have faced massive losses in their businesses due to loss of vital data. So, keeping data properly is important, immaterial of its form. Some companies use special data management software to update, delete and create data.

In the case of computer data, backup of vital information should be done. In the event that a particular computer breaks down causing the loss of vital data, the backup data would come in handy.
